A much worse Barça (and with less character) without Raphinha

The performance of FC Barcelona with and without the presence of Raphinha on the field shows an evident contrast.

The figures between victories and defeats reflect a clear dependence on the Brazilian, whose absence is having a negative impact on both the results and the intensity of the team. It is often said that one truly values someone when they are not around, and this principle is perfectly fulfilled with the Porto Alegre player. Without Raphinha, the azulgrana team has lost much of its competitive character and its high pressing, two essential aspects that the forward brings with his energy and commitment.

Raphinha, a longer absence than expected

The initial plan was for the Brazilian to return fully recovered from his muscle injury for the Clásico against Real Madrid, a match where he usually delivers his best performance. However, the winger experienced bad sensations and could not participate in the training session prior to the match. Although it is not a relapse in the right hamstring injury, all indications are that he will have to remain sidelined and will not be available against Elche this Sunday (6:30 PM, Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc).

An essential piece for Hansi Flick

The extension of his absence represents a serious setback for Hansi Flick, who considers Raphinha one of his most important players, on par with Pedri or Frenkie de Jong. The German coach is aware that Barça loses a lot without the Brazilian on the pitch. With Raphinha available, the team has played eight matches this season, winning seven and drawing one. In other words, they have only dropped two points between LaLiga and the Champions League (in Vallecas), remaining unbeaten with the Brazilian in the starting eleven. Additionally, the goal balance is striking: 21 goals scored —3 scored by Raphinha himself and 2 assists— and only 5 goals conceded. Without him, the results change drastically. Since he was injured in the 65th minute of the match against Oviedo at the Carlos Tartiere, Barça has played six matches without his presence, with a record of 3 wins and 3 losses. This equates to 50% of the possible points (9 out of 18), while with Raphinha the percentage rose to 87.5%.

Notable difference also in goals

The influence of the Brazilian is felt not only in the results but also in the offensive and defensive performance of the team. In those six matches without him, Barça scored 13 goals, although 6 of them came in a single match against Olympiacos, in which they played most of the time with one more player. In contrast, they conceded 11 goals, almost an average of two per match, a worrying statistic that reflects the loss of balance.

The first to press

This last aspect is particularly relevant, as defensive work starts from the attacking line. Raphinha is the first to initiate the press, and his attitude infects the rest. His intensity helps the team recover balls in the opponent´s half or, alternatively, maintain a more advanced and solid defensive line. In addition to his tactical contribution, Raphinha stands out for his character and leadership. Despite being injured, he traveled to the Clásico to support the team from the stands, showing his commitment. His example is an inspiration for the young players, and his absence leaves the team with less energy and reaction capacity. In his absence, Barça shows a weaker version with less soul, a reality that is becoming evident match after match.
