Szczesny does not wish to play the Clásico against Barça!

The Polish goalkeeper explained in statements to WP Sportowe Fakty that he hopes Joan García is already recovered and returns to his position between the posts: “I wish him a speedy recovery and I have no intention of playing the Clásico,” he assured.

Committed to his role in the team

Szczesny has acknowledged that he fully understands his function within FC Barcelona, and that his main objective is to help Joan García, the current starting goalkeeper of the blue and garnet team and a great promise for the coming years: “I believe he is a boy with great potential. I can honestly say that I can help him a little. I take this role with great responsibility. I don’t want anyone to have doubts. There will never be competition for the number one jersey here,” he stated. The Polish keeper also highlighted the excellent relationship he maintains with Joan and the enormous confidence he has in his future: “I value the clarity of our relationship with Joan. He knows exactly what my role is and I want to influence his performance. I have no doubt about who will be, and who should be, the starting goalkeeper of Barcelona,” he added firmly.

Prepared for any scenario

Despite accepting his role as the second goalkeeper, Szczesny emphasized that he must be ready to play at any moment, whether due to injury or suspension of the starter: “I know it sounds like a cliché, but my preparation for a match does not depend on whether I play or not. I try to be ready for every opportunity. I expected to be the second goalkeeper, but that carries the risk of having to start in goal at any moment and one must be alert to this,” he explained.

A renewal based on commitment and experience

The goalkeeper decided to extend his contract for one more year with Barcelona after the proposal presented by the club. Last season he knew he would have many opportunities to play — and so it was, ahead of Iñaki Peña — but for this campaign, he was informed that there would be a restructuring in goal and that his role would be different. Szczesny accepted the challenge professionally, understanding that his mission would be to help the team and especially Joan García in his first year as a starter. Aware of his experience at the elite level, the Pole believes he can provide advice and calmness to the young goalkeeper. Their relationship is excellent, and the coaching staff values his exemplary attitude and willingness to collaborate at all times.

A respected veteran in the locker room

Since his arrival, Szczesny has perfectly integrated into the locker room and has become one of the most appreciated footballers by his teammates. A close friend of Robert Lewandowski, he enjoys his time at Barça and has become a reference for leadership and support for the coaching staff thanks to his extensive career. The goalkeeper´s idea is to enjoy this year of contract and possibly retire at its end, although he has the option to continue for one more season.
