Koundé (and Flick), awaiting Eric´s condition

The French defender has already accumulated six consecutive matches played from start to finish, but his performance is not at its best.

It is no secret —not even to him— that Jules Koundé is far from the level shown last season. While he shone both defensively and offensively last season, being a key piece in the team´s scheme, this campaign his version has been much more discreet. The player himself is fully aware of this and is working hard to regain his best sensations.

Factors explaining his drop

There are several elements that help understand this drop in level. The absence of a fully fit Lamine Yamal since the start of the season has affected the defensive cover on his side. This has left Koundé more exposed, with less help and in more compromised situations than last year. But that is not the only problem. The collective pressure of the team has weakened, making it easier for opponents to surpass Barça´s first lines. When that happens, the entire defense suffers, and the Frenchman is one of the most affected.

A physical and tactical issue

This situation is compounded by the absence of Iñigo Martínez, who used to lead the defensive line and dictate when to push forward or retreat. His absence has reduced order and synchronization in the system. Additionally, Koundé is physically a notch below and has lost some of that spark that characterized him in his offensive projections. All of this largely explains his current performance. Despite this, the defender has accumulated nine consecutive starts with Barça (eight complete), a considerable load of minutes. The injury plague affecting the team has prevented Hansi Flick from giving him rest, although it is becoming increasingly evident that he needs it. Looking ahead to the match this Sunday at Balaídos, ideally he could start from the bench.

Espart, the natural alternative

In this context, Xavi Espart appears as Koundé´s natural replacement. The youth player has been called up several times with the first team, although he has yet to debut. However, it seems complicated for Flick to bet on him from the start in such a demanding field as Balaídos. For that reason, all eyes are on Eric García, who has shown good performance when he has had to act as a full-back. However, his physical condition raises doubts. The Martorell player suffered a nasal fracture and in the recent open training session at Spotify Camp Nou he was seen with a protective mask that was somewhat uncomfortable for him. His participation against Celta is uncertain. If he arrives in good condition, he could occupy the right-back position, allowing Koundé to rest. In that scenario, Ronald Araujo —the only center-back available at 100%— would share the defensive axis with Pau Cubarsí, who has been a substitute in the last two matches.

Pending decision

Hansi Flick will evaluate Eric García´s condition in the coming hours before deciding on the final lineup. What is clear is that Koundé has been asking for a breather for several matches, and all signs point to the fact that the time has come to give it to him.
