Jan Virgili dazzles in Mallorca under the watchful eye of Deco

The young winger was a key player in the second victory of the season for the Bermellones, a win that finally allowed them to escape the relegation zone.

It has only taken two appearances in La Liga to confirm that Jan Virgili is fully prepared to face the challenge. The former Barcelona player was transferred this summer to Mallorca; the first team had great competition in his position, and the player from Vilassar, aware of his talent, decided to make the leap to the highest level. The gamble could not have gone better

Key player in the victory against Sevilla

The Balearic team achieved their second win of the season against Sevilla, thus leaving the bottom of the table. Mateo Joseph was the hero of the scoreline with two goals that helped turn the game around, but the real spark of Jagoba Arrasate´s team was the number 19. Virgili was the only Mallorca player who created danger during a very weak first half, and in the second half, he ended up blowing the game wide open. First, he assisted Muriqi with an elegant outside touch with his left foot, and then he participated in the play of Mateo Joseph´s first goal, providing the pre-assist to Mojica. In both of Mallorca´s goals, the influence of the Catalan attacker was decisive.

Two assists and a standout U-20 World Cup

It was the first time that Jan Virgili started since his arrival at Mallorca. His initial minutes unleashed all the internal competition with Dani Rodríguez, but Arrasate maintained his full confidence in him. Against Real Madrid and Espanyol, he had already shown flashes, although his first great performance came against Atlético de Madrid. He only needed eight minutes to put pressure on Cholo Simeone´s defense. Virgili repeatedly outpaced Nahuel Molina and capped off his performance by assisting Muriqi in the equalizing goal after a brilliant individual play. If there were any doubts among Mallorca fans, that day they were dispelled. However, shortly after that match, the young winger traveled to the U-20 World Cup with the Spanish national team, which was a significant loss for his club. In the tournament, he was one of the standout players alongside Pablo García (Betis), shining with an assist against Mexico and a stunning goal against Colombia in the quarter-finals. Now, back in Mallorca, it seems hard to imagine a starting eleven without his name.

Deco closely follows his development

The FC Barcelona successfully managed his sale: they received 3.5 million euros but secured a percentage of a future transfer and a buy-back option, thus maintaining some control over the player. In just three months, Virgili´s market value has risen from three to ten million euros, according to Transfermarkt. During the Assembly of Delegates, Deco explained the reasons for his departure and made it clear that they continue to monitor his development: "Jan Virgili did not want to continue with the dynamics of the reserve team, so he was transferred to Mallorca; we are keeping an eye on his evolution." The percentage of his federative rights was one of the main demands of Deco during the negotiations, which is why they took longer than expected. Barça did not want to lose control over a player with such potential. And, for now, Jan Virgili is confirming that both Deco and Arrasate were right to bet on him.
