The Barça extends De Jong´s contract until 2029

Frenkie de Jong signed his new contract this morning, which will tie him to the blaugrana club until June 30, 2029, as reported by SPORT. The renewal event took place at the Barça commercial offices, and with this, the sports management concludes one of the most complex negotiations in recent years.

A key negotiation without obstacles

The in-person meeting that took place in September was decisive in steering the agreement. In that meeting, De Jong´s representatives expressed to the club the player´s desire to renew as soon as possible and to facilitate the process without complications, something that was received with great satisfaction by the Catalan entity. The harmony was total: both the player and Barça agreed on the importance of quickly resolving an issue that had previously generated tensions. The difference with previous stages was evident. Back then, the relationship with his former agent, Ali Dursun, was much more complicated, and when it seemed that the conversations were progressing, obstacles arose that forced the club to start over.

A key piece in Flick´s scheme

The third captain of the first team, who rejoined training this morning after the second international break of the season, experienced a last season of ups and downs. An ankle injury kept him out during preseason and the first two months of competition. Once recovered, he struggled to find his place and was even behind Marc Casadó in the battle for the midfield position. However, with the arrival of the new year, the Dutchman turned the situation around and began to show a level and consistency that had not been seen in previous years as a Barça player.

Little by little, he established himself in the starting eleven, forming a duo with Pedri at the base of the midfield. Hansi Flick managed to recover the best version of a player whose expectations have always been high, although his performance has not always lived up to them. This is even more relevant considering that his salary is one of the highest in the blaugrana locker room.

Indispensable in the current season

In the current campaign, De Jong has remained one of Flick´s essential men in the midfield, an area particularly hit by injuries at the start of the season. So far, the Dutchman has accumulated 643 minutes in eight matches, in which he has provided one assist: to Lewandowski in the 1-2 victory against Oviedo.
