Barça seeks to establish itself in Europe

Another week of European competition for FC Barcelona. The team led by Hansi Flick, who returned to winning ways against Elche after the defeat in the league Clásico against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu, must change their mindset and refocus their efforts on the Champions League. This time, the Blaugrana will visit the Jan Breydel Stadium in Bruges. In this season´s start, the Catalan team has accumulated six points out of nine possible after winning against Newcastle and Olympiacos, although they lost at home to Paris Saint-Germain under Luis Enrique in the final moments of the match played at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. Currently, Barça occupies the ninth position in the group, tied on points with Newcastle but behind the English team due to goal difference.

A key duel to stay in the fight

Flick´s team is obliged to win in Belgium if they do not want to complicate their future in the competition. Another setback could distance them from the spots that grant direct access to the round of 16. A victory in Bruges would allow Barça to remain among the contenders and avoid having to play a play-off round in February to stay alive in Europe.

The rival: a young and ambitious Brugge

Opposing them will be Club Brugge under Nicky Hayen, one of the youngest coaches in this edition of the tournament. His team is currently second in the Belgian Pro League, just three points behind leaders Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, and arrives in great form with five consecutive victories in the domestic league. However, their European journey has been much more irregular. After overcoming the third qualifying round with a 4-2 aggregate against RB Salzburg, the Belgian team has only managed one victory in three matches: the 4-1 against Monaco with Ansu Fati in the first matchday. They then suffered two defeats, against Atalanta (2-1) and Bayern Munich (4-0), results that leave them in the twentieth position of the group, within the play-off zone, with three points.
