Alert in Barça: Dani Olmo suffers an injury during training with Spain

The midfielder from Terrassa had to leave the Spanish national team´s training session after feeling a pinch in his calf. As a result, he will have to return to Barcelona to undergo medical tests.

A setback for Spain and FC Barcelona

Bad news for the Spanish national team and also for FC Barcelona. Dani Olmo could not complete the last training session before the match against Georgia due to muscle discomfort. The azulgrana playmaker, who had many chances of being a starter for Luis de la Fuente due to the absences in the Spanish attack, will return to Barcelona —as SPORT reported— to undergo the necessary medical examinations. Thus, he will miss the two qualifying matches for the 2026 World Cup against Georgia (Saturday) and Bulgaria (Tuesday). In this way, he joins the absences of Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams in the national team´s attack. During the pre-match press conference, the Spanish coach confirmed the player´s physical setback: "Dani came with fatigue and some discomfort, he trained for 15 minutes and they went to do some tests". Discomfort that, according to the coach himself, reminds him of the case of Huijsen, who also returned to his club, Real Madrid, after feeling muscle fatigue.

Official statement from the RFEF

The tests conducted at the Las Rozas facilities have confirmed the muscle injury of the Terrassa footballer and his return to Barcelona, as SPORT had previously reported. The RFEF officially communicated it with the following message: "Dani Olmo will not be able to face Georgia in Elche and Bulgaria in Valladolid due to injury. The player arrived last Monday at the camp with signs of muscle fatigue as reported by FC Barcelona. Since then, the symptoms have gradually improved with treatment and load management. Therefore, today it was planned that the forward would only do part of the scheduled training where he reported muscle discomfort in his left leg. For this reason, complementary tests were performed, and he was diagnosed with a muscle injury, which has been communicated to the medical services of FC Barcelona. The player will begin his recovery at the national team´s camp and will return to Barcelona tomorrow when the rest of the expedition travels to Elche to face the Georgian national team".

De la Fuente: "I have a special affection for him"

Regarding the criticisms that have arisen due to injuries to Barça players during the national team camps —after the case of Lamine Yamal—, Luis de la Fuente wanted to make it clear that he does not distinguish between clubs when a player suffers an injury: "I dislike the injury of any player, it is the bad part of football. Let´s see what happens. I have a special affection for Dani because of the time I have spent with him. Whether he is from one club or another, these are circumstances of football, I wish they wouldn´t fall here or in their clubs", said the coach.

A complicated moment for Barça

Awaiting the definitive confirmation and the tests that will be performed in Barcelona, everything points to Dani Olmo possibly missing the restart of the competition with his club. This is a delicate moment for the culés, who are struggling with poor results and multiple absences under the direction of Hansi Flick. Barça will face Saturday, October 18 a match in Montjuïc against Girona and, a few days later, on Tuesday, 21, will host Olympiacos in the third round of the Champions League. Two demanding duels that will serve as a thermometer before the Clásico at the Bernabéu on Sunday, October 26. The positive note for the German coach is the possible recovery of Fermín López, Raphinha, and Lamine Yamal for the first match after the international break. In contrast, Ter Stegen, Joan García, and Gavi will remain out of the playing fields. Fermín, who had been a starter ahead of Olmo before his injury, is progressing well in his recovery and has already returned to training with the ball at the Ciutat Esportiva in recent days.
