20-N of 1975: This is how Barça was on the day Franco died
Today marks 50 years since the death of Francisco Franco. At the time of the dictators death, the Barça was presided over by the board of Agustí Montal, the coach was Hennes Weisweiler, and finally, Cruyff, Neeskens, and Sotil could play together in La Liga. But the 1975-76 season did not look good. The last league match during the life of the Generalísimo ended in a sad 1-1 draw at the Camp Nou against Hércules. The first match after Francos death, just three days later, was even worse. A 1-0 defeat at the Betis ground. The Real Madrid, who were the league champions, went on to win that championship again. However, on December 28, 1975, the Barça defeated Madrid under Miljanic (2-1) on a Sunday night that went down in history, not for Neeskens goal in the 3rd minute, nor for Rexachs winning volley in stoppage time, but because it was the first time the Camp Nou was filled with Catalan flags. The Catalanist executives of the Montal board, such as Granados or Rosell, orchestrated that sudden appearance of ‘senyeres’, which the black-and-white broadcast by TVE could not hide.
